We started one of my favorite books today -- Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. We did the freewrite I usually do to start off our discussion: "When I think of Africa, I think of...." There were about thirty-three of us in the room and only one person had been to Africa -- one student went with her chorus for three weeks to Accra, Ghana. She said it was nothing like she expected, and she admitted that she expected the stereotypes that mainstream U.S. TV has miseducated us to believe.
