I love A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich! I've taught the book once or twice in African American literature classes at the University of Southern Mississippi, but it's been a long while. I also think Alice Childress is one of those under-appreciated authors. But what I like most about the beginning of A Hero is how easily I can identify with two really different characters - Benjie and Butler. Both of their voices catch at me and I can see where each of them is coming from.
